A position statement from the British Elbow and Shoulder Society with the support of the CSAW study group
The results of an important surgical trial (Placebo controlled randomised surgical trial for subacromial shoulder pain) have just been published in the Lancet
It is expected that that the study will generate a degree of media interest.
It is important that the results of the trial are interpreted appropriately and that patient care remains uncompromised.
In that light, the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS), with the support of the CSAW study group and the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) believe it important to issue this statement addressing the clinical implications of the study.
I am grateful to all of my co-signatories for their help in preparing this statement.
